The sealing clamp designs vary to meet standard requirements, typically being either compact integrity clamps, structural sealing clamps, or flange sealing clamps. The clamps are selected to satisfy several key attributes which may include effecting a permanent gas or liquid tight seal around the defect or flange coupling whilst fitting around existing flange stud-bolts.

The clamps normally incorporate a sealant injection port and separate vent in the clamp, meeting sealant flow and viscosity requirements. The sealant is designed to first ensure free flow through all paths, effecting a tight seal around failed gaskets, pin holes or other leaking zones.
