Project Description

In spring 2022, a 3” methanol line developed a leak, prompting the client to engage IK Subsea for a viable solution. Simultaneously, IK Subsea explored and presented multiple alternative solutions tailored to potential leakage scenarios, while the client conducted a survey to pinpoint the precise leakage location.

Upon identifying the leak in a 90° pipe-bend, detailed plans for a bend clamp solution were outlined, with material and machining capacity reserved accordingly. The leakage was situated in the middle of the bend, leading to the design of an elbow clamp that covered the entire bend.

Swift completion of design and analysis was followed by fabrication, successful sealing, and structural testing—all accomplished within a few days. The clamp installation included an IK Subsea anode bank to ensure anodic protection. The clamp, received at the mobilization base, was installed by divers a few days later. An IK Subsea supervisor visited the vessel, providing installation instructions during mobilization to ensure the offshore crew possessed the necessary competence and understanding.

The engineered solution including design, testing, acceptance and installation was a success, driven by IK Subsea’s Competency Based Emergency Repair procedure, which is a robust process tailored to meet urgent client requirements.
